Types of wooden crates and boxes used for storage
Wooden packaging — often described in German practice as Holzverpackung or wooden tara — is easier to choose once it is grouped by structure rather than by the product it carries. The four families below cover most of what is used to store and move goods in Germany.
Open field crates
Open crates have slatted sides with gaps between the boards. The gaps let air move through the stack, which is why this form is common for produce that needs to stay cool and dry after harvest. They are usually built from sawn softwood and are light enough to lift by hand when empty.
- Good airflow around the contents.
- Low weight, easy to carry and rinse.
- Less protection against knocks and dust than a closed case.
Closed cases and lidded boxes
Closed cases have fully boarded sides and often a fitted or nailed lid. They protect contents from dust, light and handling damage, so they suit parts, tools and items that should not be exposed. Heavier export cases may use thicker boards and corner cleats for rigidity.
Note on export use: wooden packaging crossing many national borders is frequently subject to the ISPM 15 treatment scheme for solid wood packaging material. Confirm current requirements with the supplier or the relevant authority before shipping.
Pallet collar systems
A pallet collar system combines a standard pallet base with stackable wooden rings (collars). Collars fold flat when not in use and clip onto the pallet to build an adjustable-height box. Because the height is set by the number of collars, one base can serve very different loads.
Shallow trays and nesting boxes
Shallow tray boxes are used where contents are stacked only a few layers deep, such as delicate produce. Many tray designs nest into each other when empty, which saves space on the return trip.
Choosing between them
- Match the load. Heavier or denser loads point toward closed cases or collar systems on a rated pallet.
- Consider the climate. Items that need airflow favour open crates; items that need protection favour closed cases.
- Count the reuse cycles. Collars and sturdy cases reward repeated handling; light open crates suit shorter loops.
